EU national parliaments

In order to allow EuropeAid Development and Cooperation to achieve its goals, the support of members of the national parliaments is needed.

First, national parliaments must approve the strategies and budgets that provide the means for their bilateral development aid programmes and activities, but also directly or indirectly for EU actions.

Secondly, the role of national parliaments is important so as to ensure that development is a mainstreaming factor in the other policy domains (trade, sanitary norms, the Common Agricultural Policy, etc). This is necessary in order to achieve sustainable development, in the EU as well as in developing countries. In time, bringing together more development aid means will be the only way to make the aid really coherent. And thirdly, through national parliaments, European citizens can be informed as to what their taxes are being spent on, and why this development aid is in their interest, too.
