EU development funding for Costa Rica aims mainly to support social cohesion and regional integration.
EU Aid programmes
In 2002-2006, the European Commission provided funds for:
- modernising and decentralising public administration (30.5%)
- economic cooperation (35%)
- science and technology (34.5%)

In 2007-2013, the European Commission foresees to provide €34M in funding for:
- modernisation to promote social cohesion (75%)
- regional integration (25%)
