Panel of the Wise

The Panel of the Wise is a consultative body of the African Union, comprised of five eminent individuals appointed for a 3-year period. Its role is to provide opinions to the Peace and Security Council on peace and security issues and to promote efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts across the continent.

  

The first panel has been established in December 2007 and includes Salim Ahmed Salim, former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity, Elisabeth K. Pognon, President of the Constitutional Court in Benin, Ahmed Ben Bella, former President of Algeria, Miguel Trovoada, former President of Sao Tome and Principe as well as Brigalia Bam, Head of South Africa's Independent Electoral Commission.
