Since 1990, Commission funding for ACP countries has risen steadily each year in real terms – and now it is spending more than ever before on aid for trade. Since 2001, more than €850 million of Commission funds have been used to help ACP regions to boost trade and integrate into the world economy.

In order to buffer against the effects of soaring food prices, the EU supports FAO in improving the food security and livelihood situation of rural poor agricultural families in Mozambique. -

Improving transport infrastucture in Ghana
This project aims at providing a sound planning framework for the transport sector, informing the sector’s service, meeting the country's needs in economic development, regional integration and social cohesion. -

Increasing transparency and efficiency in Liberian public finances
The project improves the accountability and effectiveness in the management of the public finances in Liberia. It also supports the General Audit Commission to ensure sustainable human resources management systems for the future. -

Food security is a major problem in Damot Gale and Kacha Bira. Through improved community water supply, natural resource conservation, agricultural development and promotion of reproductive health programmes livelihoods can be greatly improved. -

Construction of Sidjou - Idjikoundzi road
The construction of the road from Sidjou to Idjkoundzi provides access to five villages in the region, allowing local people access to urban markets to sell their produce and providing secure access to basic services such as hospitals and schools. -

Local economic development combines grant funding with technical assistance to help municipalities improve their business, remove barriers to job creation, and co-finance business growth opportunities. -

The project aims at building the capacity of the Namibian Ministry of Lands and Resettlement to manage land affairs in an equitable and timely manner, through better land registration, valuation and land resettlement. -

Improving service delivery and local governance in Zambia
The projects aims at improving service delivery and efficiency of decision making by local authorities by changing their management skills, improving their performance review standards and raising people's awareness on decentralisation policy. -

Sustainable agriculture development in Koinadugu District in Sierra Leone
The aim of SADev project is to contribute to sustainable food security in Koinadugu District in northern Sierra Leone, which is the largest and most remote district in the country. -

Income Generating Public Works Programme (IGPWP) in Malawi
The Income Generating Public Works Programme promotes productive and income-generating activities for the rural poor in Malawi. Village forestry clubs, directed primarily by women, belong to the main beneficiaries of the programme. -

Electricity is now available again 24 hours a day to a small but growing number of customers after war-related damages and looting led to a total stop to generation in 2004. 48% of the present assets of the Electricity corporation are EU funded. -

PRP-II focuses on direct and concrete support to the residents living in volatile communities. The programme promotes community based projects where the communities decide what their needs are and put a project together. -

Managing livestock diseases is of critical importance for Kenya to combat rising levels of poverty in its arid lands, and capitalize on its huge livestock resource. -

This project in Mozambique aims to improve the Food Security Situation of the population living in Nhamatanda, Buzi and Marracuene districts through increased production and better commercialization of agricultural products. -

Supporting the improvement of public financial management in the Government of South Africa
The project develops financial management policies, standards and human capacities and supports the implementation of the Public Finance Management Act. -

Support to Vulnerable Farming Households Affected by Increasing Food and Commodity Prices in Lesotho
In order to mitigate the impact of soaring food and agricultural input prices, the EU provided €4 million through FAO in Lesotho to support vulnerable, food insecure farming households. 36 300 households received quality agricultural supplies. -

Nkundabana Initiative for Psychosocial Support (NIPS)
Child-headed households in Rwanda are supported via a community-care network whereby volunteers serve as mentors to orphan children. This scheme has empowered many children and volunteers do carry on the mentor work even after the end of the project. -

Fighting HIV transmission in Burkina Faso
The project focuses on the fight against HIV transmission especially in young women and female sex workers. The creation of mobile testing centres has succeeded in increasing education, access to testing and raising awareness among the target groups. -

Ndomo: L'école d'initiation et l'histoire d'un succès
Le programme Ndomo soutient les artistes et acteurs en renforçant leurs compétences techniques. Des cours de formation sur la peinture ont conduit à la création d'associations féminines qui travaillent ensemble. Le revenu de chaque membre de la «Ndomo" provient du compte collectif. -

Access to sustainable water and sanitation services, hygiene promotion and capacity building in water and sanitation & water resources management programme, Same District, Tanzania
The EU water facility project aims to tackle poverty by improving access to sustainable water and sanitation services. Tanzania which suffered from a drought in 2005 is one of the countries to benefit from this water resources management programme. -

Improving water facilities in Uganda
In 2001 the EU supported the renovation of Mubende's (Uganda) water supply system dating from 1925. The increased, easier and affordable access to safe water contributed to reducing poverty levels and improving the quality of life in the area. -

8th EDF Micro Projects Programme (MPP)
The Micro Projects Programme in Uganda has achieved improved access to healthcare, primary education and water-sanitation facilities in poor rural areas. This community-led project has generated many employment opportunities and boosted rural economy -

A comprehensive HIV treatment & care package in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is one of the countries most severely affected by HIV/AIDS. Reducing the prevalence and harmful effects of HIV/AIDS and improving access to vulnerable rural populations is the focus of this project. -

In 2004, Hurricane Ivan ravaged Jamaica, causing extensive damage. A lack of access to basic quality infrastructure and a widespread feeling of helplessness currently exist among the poor communities. This project aims to respond to their needs. -

Support Programme for the Promotion of Education in Environmental Management (ARPEGE)
In a context of alarming deterioration of the environment, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles decided to set up a pilot project providing regional support for the promotion of an education for the management of the environment. -

Strengthening First-Line Health Providers Capacity through Mutual Cooperation in Burundi, Haïti and Guinea
From the 640.000 people infected with AIDS in all these three countries, only less than 11.000 can have access to treatment. This project has improved access to health services and helped to increase awareness of patient's rights. -

Employment Intensive Programme in Support of Mogadishu
Promotion of community based employment projects is the only way to re-integrate crisis-affected groups and give them a sense of belonging. So far, 1 700 people (70% women) from the poorer sections of society have been recruited via the ILO programme

‘Europe Day’ 2013 marked in sub-Saharan Africa
Europe Day – celebrated annually on 9 May, the day when the European integration project began – was marked by EU Delegations in sub-Saharan African countries in a variety of ways, to highlight the strong links with partner countries and inform African citizens about EU development cooperation and European integration. Activities included: interviews with EU Ambassadors in leading newspapers, the organisation of film festivals, sports events and quizzes and the signing of new EU-funded projects. Some Delegations organised different events over several days.

Raising Awareness for Europe Day
Many EU-Delegations across the African continent used the occasion of Europe Day to organize events and activities to raise awareness and visibility for EU projects and to find out more about Europe as such. For example, In Addis Ababa, the EU-Delegation to the African Union hosted a reception in three different pavilions in the EU compound: one for Benin, which currently holds the AU presidency, one for Denmark, representing the EU presidency and one for the host country Ethiopia.

The European Commission announces a new programme to strengthen institutions in charge of trans-boundary water management in Africa to mark World Water Day
The European Commission has announced €3 million to help strengthen regional cooperation at the political, economic and stakeholder level in the water management sector. The new programme will favour sustainable management of water resources which are shared by more than one country, by using African expertise, and therefore enhance peace and security as well as help alleviate poverty in the region.
