First meeting of the Centres of Excellence Initiative
Brussels, 15/16 May 2013 – During their first meeting in the frame of the Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative, the new Heads of Regional Secretariats met in Brussels to get to know each other, to discuss regional priorities and to set up a programme for the future.
In their opening speeches, Rudolf ROY (EEAS) and Adriaan VAN DER MEER (European Commission, DG Development and Cooperation, Head of Unit B5 – Instrument for Nuclear Safety and Instrument for Stability) presented an overview of the CBRN risk mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) initiative.
Eddie MAIER (European Commission, DG Development and Cooperation, Head of Sector IFS, B5) outlined the way to go; then the newly selected Heads of Regional Secretariats from all over the world (South East Asia, Atlantic Façade, North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, Central and Eastern Africa, South East Europe and Ukraine and Moldova and South Caucasus, Gulf Cooperation Council Countries) exchanged their regional views, challenges, priorities and perspectives.
During the second day, the group visited the Antwerp megaport (anti CBRN risk measures) and the European Commission’s Institute of Reference Measurements and Methods (EC IRMM) in Geel.
