Tonga

The Kingdom of Tonga is an archipelago of more than 170 islands in the South Pacific. It is highly dependent on a developing tourism industry, agriculture, forestry and fishing. With only modest rates of growth, Tonga’s economy is fragile. However, its social indicators, such as health and education, have steadily improved and the nation is now well on its way to achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets by 2015.

The Country Strategy Paper for Tonga (2008-13) and a National indicative programme detail  the priorities of EU funding under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF).

The EC response strategy concentrates on renewably energy, as the focal sector under the 10thEDF. The first Energy Sector Reform Contract (€6.488M) was signed in 2013, focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency. The intended support will contribute to give a better access to electricity for the population of Tonga through the development of more energy efficient electricity production solutions and better access to renewable energy.

Additional assistance has been provided for programmes supporting non-state actors and promoting good governance as well as to support and strengthen institutional capacity in Tonga.
