Youth unemployment

To help to tackle youth unemployment, the Commission has sent Action Teams to the eight Member States with the most serious problem (Italy, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Latvia, Spain, Lithuania and Slovakia). These teams are taking a fresh look at the use of EU Structural Funds (Cohesion Fund, Regional Development Fund and Social Fund) and discussing with national authorities how best to help to reallocate the money available to projects that will contribute the most to boosting youth employment within a short time. They are also available to advise Member States on mid- and longer term solutions to enhance employment such as adjusting tax policy or social contributions to favour employment. These solutions are due to be included in Member States' National Reform Programmes to be submitted to the Commission in April as part of closer coordination of Member States' economic policies.
