Marie Curie Actions funded job vacancy EARLY-STAGE RESEARCHER (ESR) AT FRAUNHOFER LBF IN THE FIELD OF ENERGY EFFICIENT SMART STRUCTURES

The ESR will receive training and actively perform research in all aspects of numerical and experimental metholody development. As part of his or her training, the ESR will also receive complementary skills training to prepare him or her for a future career in engineering and/or management. The research activities will mainly be carried out at the Fraunhofer LBF located in Darmstadt, Germany, combined with research visits and/or short-term secondments to other members of the network. The ESR will work in the Smart Structures research division of the Fraunhofer LBF (www.lbf.fraunhofer.de). The ESR will be hired on a contract for 36 mounth according to regulations for Marie Curie grant holders.

Description

In the past, most vibration control concepts were addressing non-rotating parts. However, many known problems in the field of noise and vibration occur in rotatory systems. The reason behind was mainly the problem of energy transfer into a rotating systems as well as defining actuator concepts suitable for torsional oscillations or vibrations. Therefor the focus of this research position is on the investigation of smart concepts for vibration control in rotating systems and for rotatory oscillations by conducting comprehensive numerical and experimental studies. This includes the investigation of concepts to avoid excitations within the rotating system (e.g. unbalanced masses) as well as concepts for active and passive vibration control e.g. by means of torsional absorbers. The conceptual study will be followed by the design and realization of a laboratory-like demonstrator and experimental validation of the investigated vibration avoidance and control approaches. The task is highly multi-disciplinary and strongly linked to other research topics within the ANTARES project.

ANTARES (Advanced Training and Research in Energy Efficient Smart Structures) is an Initial Training Network (ITN) Nr. 606817, funded under the FP7 Marie Curie programme of the EC.
This ANTARES ITN brings together research and industrial partners who will collectively train early stage researchers, drawing together skills and expertise in a range of different technical approaches. The industrial partners put forward specific applications, behind which are generic difficulties associated with energy efficiency analysis. The academic and research centre partners bring a diverse range of potential research approaches and the capability of research training, provision of courses and dissemination and outreach to the wider community. Together the consortium can develop and promote research, knowledge and application of energy efficiency management analysis within EU industry.

The candidate must not have resided, worked or studied in Germany for more than 12 months within the last 3 years.
He or she holds an MSc degree in Engineering, has less than 4 years of experience and has not yet been awarded a doctoral degree.

The candidate must be at least fluent in spoken and written English, German is a plus. Willingness to learn the German language is required. Specific experience with CAE (e.g. Matlab/Simulink, Multi Body Simulation, Finite Element Analysis) and smart structures is an advantage. The candidate is expected to have the proper qualifications to perform this work as part of a PhD study including presentations of the work at conferences and publications in scientific journals.
