The Advanced Materials and Systems for Energy Area of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) launches the PhD Fellowship Call with the aim to support university graduates with master studies from all over the world to enroll in a training and research program in the area of energy, materials sciences, physics, chemistry, engineering chemistry, engineering, environmental sciences, nanoscience and nanotechnologies or other related program duly accepted by the IREC fellowship commission that ultimately leads to the completion of a Doctoral Thesis.
This call is addressed to highly qualified and talented graduate students with an enthusiastic interest in energy related research. The students will have the opportunity to join one of the research groups at IREC and will follow an individual research project under the direction of an internationally renowned group leader in a creative and stimulating scientific environment. The students will have access to the Institute’s first class instrumental facilities.
Selected graduate students will be awarded a contract for full-time studies in order to achieve the Doctoral degree.

Photo-Electro-Chemical Materials and Systems for Solar Fuels
Electrochemistry for energy storage systems
Advanced sensor and energy harvesting system
New nanometrology characterization tools
Atomic Layer Deposition application on 1 dimensional nanostructures
Methodologies for advanced industrial process monitoring in PV technologies.
New processes for sustainable thin film photovoltaic technology
Synthesis of Heterogeneous Catalysts.
Catalysts and new designs and concepts for methanation reactor
Ultra high resolution electrodynamic 3D printing of energy storage nanodevices
Binary nanocrystal superlattices for high performance thermoelectrics through quantum confinement and energy filtering
Nanomaterials for hydrogen technologies
Integration of nanomaterials in micro-power sources
The call is open to graduate students from any nationalities that fulfill the following eligibility criteria:
a.- Hold a Master Degree in the areas of Energy, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Material Sciences, Engineering, Nanosciences and nanotechnologies or Chemical Engineering or an equivalent degree accepted by the Ph.D. fellowship IREC comission which allows them to start PhD studies. The degree title must be not of more than three year old.
b.- Be admitted in a PhD Program at the time of the signature of the pre-doctoral contract.
c.- The minimum eligible average mark of the candidate's academic record must be, at least, according the rules from the last official call from the Generalitat de Catalunya: for first and second cycle bachelor's, engineering or architecture degrees equal to or greater than 1.60 (scale 1-4) (2013 call), calculated in accordance with the criteria specified in Real Decreto 1267/1994 (or an equivalent signed average mark declaration –see annex-). Candidates must present their academic records according to this template.

Early stage researcher or 0-4 yrs (Post graduate)
First Stage Researcher (R1)
a.- The evaluation and selection of the candidates will be performed by the IREC Ph.D. fellowship commission that will propose the ordered selection of the adequate candidates to the project supervisor(s) for his/her/their final acceptation.
b.- The IREC Ph.D. fellowship commission will evaluate the documents received from all candidates and, when necessary, will call them for personal interviews.
c.- The selection will be based on academic marks, the CV, academic and professional references and personal interview (if performed) as well as the documentary proved expertise and skills related with the topics of the grant. The score of each one of these selection criteria will be defined by the IREC Ph.D. fellowship commission.
d.- Once an adequate candidate is selected and accepted, the position will be closed. The name of the awardees will be public and edited on the IREC’s website. If not, the position will remain open during six months.
e.- On acceptance of the grants, awardees should hand in a copy of the admission document to a PhD program.
a.- The students admitted in a PhD Program will be considered research personnel in training and they will have an employment contract (a pre-doctoral contract) which is regulated in the Spanish Law 14/2011, of June 1st, of Science, Technology and Education. The positions are offered for periods of one year, renewable for a total of up to three years of total period. The IREC Ph. D. fellowship commission could propose according merits and level category of the Ph.D. work the extension for a complementary four year.
b.- The gross yearly salary of the contract shall be €15.000 (1st and 2nd year) and €17.000 (3rd and also for the 4th possible extension year), split into 12 monthly payments. Each year the holder needs to receive the approval of the performed activity by the PhD Fellowship Commission of IREC
c.- The grant holder is entitled to temporary interrupt the grant in the following situations: temporary disability, risk during pregnancy, maternity, paternity and adoption or foster care. The time elapsed during this interruption will not be accounted for against the total time.
d.- The starting date of the grant will be agreed between the beneficiary and the supervisor. The contract will take effect on the date when the awarded student joins the center.
e.- The PhD fellowship includes an annual complementary support of the 660 euros for helping in the payment of the costs of enrolment in the PhD program. These costs will be paid by each beneficiary to the university, and later the beneficiary will justify this payment as part of the documents to be presented to the Ph.D. Fellowship commission for renew the grant. This payment will be included in the salary of month of June.
f.-The PhD fellowship includes a final complementary support of up to 700 euros assigned to the cost originated for the printed edited version of the Ph.D. memory as well as those expenses attributed to the dissertation event to be assumed under IREC responsibility.
g.- It is responsibility for the candidate to present all the required documentations adequately translated to the local official language if needed.

*Photocopy of transcript stating the marks earned at the February, June and/or September exam sittings. Applicants must likewise attach their average mark for all courses, as set forth under Real Decreto 1267/1994. (See the annex documents for normalized presentation)
*Curriculum Vitae, specifying the degree programme completed and any relevant Professional experience, along with any relative justifying paperwork, as well as any documentary evidences about reported expertise and skills.

a.- The pre-doctoral student must submit to IREC a brief report on the results obtained over the ongoing year one month before the expiration date of his/her yearly contract.
b.- Approval of this report by the IREC PhD fellowship commission and the corresponding University PhD Program Academic Committee is a necessary requirement for the renewal of the contract for the new year.
c.- The beneficiary must hand in a copy of the PhD program registration for next academic year.
d.- The beneficiaries must include in their written works the expression “With the support of the Catalonian Institute for Energy Research (IREC)” as well as in their oral public presentations including those complementary information required for IREC for fulfilling its institutional duties.
a.- The pre-doctoral contract is incompatible with any other grant with the same purpose.
b.- Grants for mobility, the prizes awarded because of the academic record and the grants for short stays in other institutions, will be compatible with the IREC grants. When compatible grants include the fees for a PhD program, these will be refunded to IREC.
