The new National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication examines innovative processes of design, engineering and construction in architecture. The main focus of this NCCR is research into digital design and manufacturing processes and their synthesis through the use of novel technologies. Through a multidisciplinary approach the disciplines of architecture, structural design, robotics, and material and computer sciences are brought together in an ambitious partnership to establish digital technology as an essential part of future building processes.

PhD Researcher “Design of Robotic Aggregations of Materials with Unpredictable Geometry”
Your responsibilities: This PhD position is part of the NCCR subproject “Structurally-graded Assemblies”. The objec-tive of your work is the design of digital fabrication processes to assemble building materials with unpredictable geometries, such as quarry stones or concrete rubble. As such, the investigation will include fundamental research into advanced design processes, three-dimensional scanning and modelling techniques, real-time data and assembly analysis, aiming at the development of an innovative and environmentally sound building process using no additional binding material, reinforcement or formwork. The project will be specifically linked to other NCCR PhD projects and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Mark Pauly (EPF Lausanne). The position is full-time and fully funded.

Your profile: You have a very good architectural or advanced technical degree, corresponding to the FHEQ-Level 7. We expect strong programming skills as well as profound knowledge of professional computer-aided design and 3D modelling. In addition, you have experience in CNC/CAM and/or robotic fabrication, as well as strong analytical and mathematical skills. Fluent English and German language skills are required for this position and you should be reliable, accurate, have high level of initiative and be able to work independently while concurrently having excellent teamwork and communication skills.
