Project Description
The INFIERI Project implements a European Research and Training Network for developing intelligent devices and tools for cutting-edge applications in Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Medical Physics and Telecommunications. Within the framework of that project, we aim at developing, optimizing and using novel high tech tools for applications to the fields covered by this interdisciplinary program with valuable synergy between them.

This ESR project will concentrate on the development of a novel real time trigger based on Silicon pixel detectors for the upgrade at the LHC in High Energy Physics. The application to a specific Physics analysis case will be the other main focus of the work

In particular, the ESR will be trained to the development of real time algorithms, the software techniques to optimize their performances, the use of hardware firmware to include it in a Level-1 trigger selection in the environment of the High Luminosity and High Energy LHC. This application will make a strong use of the overall tracking system with in particular the Pixel micro-vertex. It will introduce the student in important Physics and detector aspects. Another major part of this ESR project is Physics analysis that will make her/him understand the Physics interest of this novel real time track trigger selection system.

The successful candidate will take part to the following phases of work: i) development of high performance real time algorithms; ii) their optimization on benchmarking platforms investigating several novel processing units, that will be employed for the upgrade of the LHC in High Energy Physics; iii) test on a demonstrator that will give a full overview of the complete detection system where these new tools might be applied.

The work will be carried out at the AstroParticle and Cosmology (APC) Laboratory, in Paris. Stays at CERN and Fermi National Lab in the USA are planned. Established collaboration with other partners in the network are foresee as well.

The fellow will be enrolled in the Doctoral school of Physics of the University Paris-Diderot with possible co-advising with one of the collaborating INFIERI partner.
