European Research Council funded job vacancy Post-doc at CEA LETI: Nano Opto Mechanical Systems for sensing applications

The present post-doc position is open in the framework of an ERC Consolidator Grant (project Enlightened) and will consist in envisioning the future generations of silicon devices for sensing based on both the NEMS and the nano-optics expertise of LETI.
The prime objective is to obtain devices with state-of-the-art transduction efficiency and optomechanical coupling to finally reach unprecedented sensing performance. The work will consist in developing methods to design and provide guidelines to fabricate the devices, and in characterizing them. A new, dedicated optical test setup will have to be designed and realized, along with the adequate experimental protocols. Several device generations with further improvement will be fabricated.

Description

Background
The present post-doc position is open in the framework of an ERC Consolidator Grant (project Enlightened) and will consist in envisioning the future generations of silicon devices for sensing based on both the NEMS and the nano-optics expertise of LETI.
Nano-Electro-Mechanical systems have been a field of extremely active research for more than a decade now. They generate particular interest in a wide range of applications, from quantum measurements to biotechnology. In the competitive context of high-level research, CEA LETI has been designing, modeling, fabricating and characterizing NEMS-based sensors for several years. Besides a long-standing collaboration with Caltech (nanovlsi.com), those developments have led to high-profile publications (Hanay et al, Nature Nanotech, Sept 2012), as well as to the first industrial initiative worldwide in the NEMS field with the creation of the start-up APIX technology (apixtechnology.com). LETI is also leader in the field of silicon photonics for various applications like ultra-high speed telecom. It designs and fabricates advanced photonic circuits including many fundamental elements like optical nano-resonators.

Opening:
The prime objective is to obtain devices with state-of-the-art transduction efficiency and optomechanical coupling to finally reach unprecedented sensing performance. The work will consist in developing methods to design and provide guidelines to fabricate the devices, and in characterizing them. A new, dedicated optical test setup will have to be designed and realized, along with the adequate experimental protocols. Several device generations with further improvement will be fabricated.
Beside the exceptional context mentioned above, the person in charge will join a small team and will benefit from technological runs for specifically designed devices, as well from several unique test setups to implement the developed devices in real conditions with regards to chosen sensing applications.

Requirements
Background in optics will be appreciated, ideally in optomechanics ; background in general or applied physics will be welcome. Knowledge on M/NEMS transduction principles, noise issues, design, electrical characterization and instrumentation would be a plus.
Applicants must provide evidence of academic performance with a strong publication record, excellent writing and communication skills, and a commitment to work on scientifically challenging problems. She/he must also have a taste for multidisciplinary team work. Candidates will enjoy access to LETI high level facilities and instrumentation. In return, all group members are expected to contribute to the progress of the whole project, and publish their work in top scientific journals in timely fashion.
