European Research Council funded job vacancy Postdoc position on computational modelling in the ERC project titled "Nonlinear Laser Lithography"

We are looking for an experienced theoretician to work closely with experimentalists on pattern formation in dissipative far-from-equilibrium systems. We have ongoing experiments involving three physically different, but conceptually and mathematically inter-related implementations: (i) dynamic self-assembly of nanoscale colloidal particles, (ii) nonlinear laser interactions with materials, leading to self-organized pattern formation, and (iii) mode-locked laser oscillators. At this point, we are particularly interested in an individual who will focus on modelling of (i), while closely interacting with ongoing activities in (ii) and (iii).

Relevant prior experience includes modelling nonlinear and/or stochastic systems in general, and more specifically, colloidal self-assembly, fluid dynamics, thermal diffusion, computational fluid dynamics.

Synopsis of the ERC Project "Nonlinear Laser Lithography, NLL"

Control of matter via light has always fascinated humankind; not surprisingly, laser patterning of materials is as old as the history of the laser. Funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant, we aim to develop hitherto unimaginable levels of control over matter via laser light: While we strive for laser-controlled self-assembly of nano particles and self-organized pattern formation, i.e., steps towards a 3D material synthesizer, we are also asking fundamental questions about far-from-equilibrium physics.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a highly versatile physicist with expertise in numerical modelling and background either in statistical physics, colloidal science, fluid dynamics or nonlinear guided waves.

Although the focus of this search is theory, experimentalists with strong theoretical background can also be considered.

Benefits

Initial appointment for 1 year, with possibility to extend to subsequent years (project duration is 5 years). Gross salary can be up to 50000€/year, depending on qualifications. Note that living costs in Ankara are lower (by a factor of ~2) than most European cities.
