Professor Position in Rock Mechanics

Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for: PROFESSOR POSITION IN ROCK MECHANICS which will be filled primarily on Assistant Professor level of the Aalto University’s Tenure track system.

Based on the department's strategy, the focus of the research is on eco-efficient society and sustainable use of water and mineral resources. Currently, the department has 11 professors.
The above mentioned position is located in the Geoengineering research and teaching group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, see http://civil.aalto.fi/en/research/geoengineering/. The Geoengineering group conducts research related to Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Rock Engineering and Engineering Geology, Applied Geophysics and Highway Engineering. The group currently consists of four professors, lecturers, teaching researchers, doctoral students and technical staff, total staff being around 30. The group has research facilities for the experimental research.
The elected professor will carry out research on rock mechanics, particularly on application of rock mechanics in utilization of bedrock as a space as well as a source of raw materials. Research can involve rock mechanical behavior and characteristics of bedrock or their significance to rock engineering activities and final engineering structures. Research can also consider how safety and environmental and economic issues should be taken into account throughout the life span of rock and mining engineering projects.
Applications are invited from individuals who have a strong research and teaching interest in rock mechanics and strive for academic excellence. Throughout their careers, those under the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher education, to follow the advances of their field, to take part in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interactions and international collaboration in their field.
The applicant is expected to possess a suitable doctor’s degree and he or she should display evidence of high quality activities in research and teaching in the field of rock mechanics.
