PhD Thesis “Persuasion Technologies”

Over the past years, the “Dynamic Transportation Systems” group within the AIT´s Mobility Department has carried out extensive research in the field of investigating the determinants of human mobility behavior. Numerous mobility solutions aim at encouraging people to alter their behavior patterns and adopt sustainable forms of transportation, particularly regarding shifts between high energy and low energy users (private automobiles to walking or mass transit). However, little is known about how different solutions actually affect the motivation to change attitudes or behaviors. Therefore, the potential of technological approaches to change mobility behavior through persuasion and social influence needs to be thoroughly examined. The final goal is to explore and identify successful persuasive strategies to enable, motivate and trigger users to shift from high energy to low energy modes.

We are seeking an exceptional PhD candidate to fill a sponsored research position involving the examination of how persuasion technologies can be utilized to encourage positive and sustainable modal shifts in mobility behavior in cities.

This PhD project will be part of the research collaboration between the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that aspires to advance the state-of-the-art in the field of influencing attitudes and behaviours through persuasion technologies.
