The partners of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) PeRceptually Optimised VIdeo CompresSION (PROVISION) are offering different Early Stage Researcher (ESR) and Experienced Researcher (ER) positions all over Europe. The various vacancies are located at the University of Bristol, the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin, the British Broadcasting Corporation in London, the RTWH Aachen and the University of Nantes with secondments in the different institutions and internships at renowned associated partners all over the world.
A total of 15 positions are available, 12 at ESR level and 3 at ER level. The eligibility criteria for these posts and the detailed description of each project area are provided in the link below. The salaries for these posts depend on the country where the post is hosted but are in the region of 46 T€/yr for ESRs and 67 T€/yr for ERs.

Description

Based in the Visual Information Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering, this Marie Curie ITN project will create a new content-driven framework for video compression, paying specific attention to perceptual coding for emerging immersive technologies. Our aim is to shift the video coding paradigm from rate-distortion optimisation to rate-quality modelling, where region-based parameters are combined with perceptual quality metrics to inform and drive the coding and synthesis processes. Research is needed to fully exploit the method's potential and to yield stable and efficient solutions.

Three posts are available in this area; one for an Experienced Researcher (ER) of 2 years duration, and two for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs), each lasting 3 years. Both ER and ESRs will be required to formulate new research ideas and directions relevant to the grant and topic and present and demonstrate results locally and internationally to industry, conferences and standards bodies. You will be responsible for the timely delivery and reporting in association with specific research areas. All posts will involve secondments to other European partner organisations.

As well as conducting independent research, the ER will play a major role in coordinating the research programme, advising PhD students, and in developing a stable validation and reference platform. You will have a PhD related to video compression, with experienced in video quality assessment, and video analysis and synthesis together with excellent software engineering skills in Matlab and C++. Knowledge and experience of HEVC is also desirable.

This project will be intimately linked to Test Models I. It will share many of the same attributes and structure. It will differ from TM I in that the residual coding will be performed using multiscale oriented representations based on wavelets or related transforms. The other difference will be that this TM will allow the incorporation of prior 3D scene geometry where appropriate, in order to improve coding gain. The goal will be to specify, develop and maintain the ITN reference software and manage its use as a testing and validation platform for the algorithmic tools developed in WP2-4. Test data collection and core experiments will be defined in collaboration with the ESRs and the ERs in the ITN.
