Marie Curie Actions funded job vacancy PhD position “Distributed Deterministic Computer Vision” for Marie Curie EID (RetNet project)

  !   Offer by Large Company/SME

The European Industrial Doctorate Programme on Future Real-Time Networks (RetNet) aims at advancing the state of the art and practice in predictable real-time and Internet networking, a research area of immediate interest to European industry. The project supports 5 PhD students (Early Stage Researchers) to investigate various aspects of real-time communication networks targeting future embedded applications.

RetNet will be conducted in close cooperation of Mälardalen Real-Time Research Centre (MRTC), at Mälardalen University, Västerås, Sweden and TTTech Computertechnik AG, Vienna, Austria. The programme is further supported by the associated partners Vienna University of Technology, Volvo Construction Equipment, Ericsson and ABB.

The researchers will participate in the scientific curriculum at MDH and gain experience in industrial R&D at TTTech. All five PhD students will have both an academic and an industrial supervisor supporting them in their individual PhD research projects.

Description

Within the last decade, real-time communication in various embedded system domains has seen a significant trend towards time-determinism and high reliability. Time-triggered embedded networks have found wide attention in e.g. the aerospace, automotive and industrial domains. Today, the real-time world faces a strong demand for supporting the “open-world” communication paradigm, where classic real-time communication is combined with dynamic and flexible communication aspects. This integration requires careful attention especially when core features of time-triggered communication such as dependability and determinism are combined with dynamic and flexible networking approaches. Furthermore, critical system aspects of real-time control systems, most notably robustness, safety, and security must be addressed.

The RetNet project directly addresses these challenges of future real-time networks. RetNet targets the integration of real-time communication systems and open-world communication, researching and developing solutions for a broad range of future applications such as the Internet of Things. The work is based on time-triggered Ethernet technology (TTEthernet) which supports this integration. In particular, RetNet will advance the existing TTEthernet capabilities to meet the following high-level requirements:
• Architectural adaptations and extensions for mixed-criticality (guaranteed and best-effort) communication networks, including novel approaches to network configuration and harmonization of TTEthernet to existing networking standards
• Physical and architectural extensions to accommodate wireless communication
• Development of comprehensive security concepts for mixed-criticality networks
• Identification and development of future application models for mixed-criticality networks

The aim of the research project “Distributed Deterministic Computer Vision” is to research and develop the necessary methods and tools that allow to exploit the benefits of real-time and reliable networks based on TTEthernet also in the domain of future advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The tasks of the researcher will include:
• Capturing the state-of-the-art in computer vision, in particular distributed approaches in a computer network
• Conceptual development of solutions for enhancing distributed computer vision approaches with flexible real-time networks
• Development of concepts that improve the reliability of computer vision approaches
• Prototype development of the solutions as proofs of concept
• Testing and evaluation of the chosen approaches
