Marie Curie Actions funded job vacancy Time- and energy-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy study of radiation damage

A PhD position at CIMAP, University of CAEN, in experimental solid state physics is open for an immediate start. The student will work on an energy- and time-resolved spectrometer for VUV-light, studying the impact of swift heavy ions on the lifetime of scintillating fibers. The PhD work involves work at an industrial partner as well as at partner institutions in the SPRITE network.

Description

SPRITE is an EC funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network in the multi-disciplinary applications of ion beams. SPRITE brings together twelve academic institutes and research centers of excellence, leading the European field in that context. SPRITE also has 7 associated partners including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
As scintillating fibers may be used to measure the ion beam intensity in cancer treatment by swift heavy ions, the behavior of these fibers under such novel conditions is very important. The PhD student will study the efficiency under swift heavy ion irradiation and of the radiation hardness of these fibers. For this goal, a setup studying the photon emission after ion impact will be used. Therefore, an important part of the thesis will be the collaboration with industrial partner as well as with other European researchers. One part of the thesis consists of performing experiments at the GANIL facility using photon spectroscopy, which allows measuring the emission dynamics resolved in time. Additionally, the PhD student will work with the industrial partner iXFiber (Lannion) in the construction of the glass fibers which will be used in the radiation hardness study. Last, but not least, complementing measurements with other ion species, electrons or photons will be undertaken at other research institutions.
Applicants should be eligible for a PhD study at the University of Caen, Basse Normandie. Applicants must satisfy the Marie-Curie ‘Early Stage Researchers’ eligibility criteria and so should have no more than 4 years research experience, counted from the diploma that gives the right to embark in a doctoral degree. Owing to EU “mobility” regulations, applications cannot be considered from researchers who have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment (short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account). This position is Marie Curie funded for a fixed-term for 36 months.
The standard rates for Marie Curie Early Stage Researchers apply. The gross salary for this position will be €44118 per annum. In addition a monthly mobility allowance of €813 is payable for researchers without a family and €1161 for those with a family.
Informal enquiries are welcome and may be made Henning Lebius, lebius@ganil.fr
Your completed application form should contain:
• Curriculum Vitae
• A short letter of motivation
• Information on how you fulfill the eligibility criteria
• Names of 3 referees from whom references can be sought
