Graduate student for studying muscle biology and the ubiquitin proteasome system
We are looking for students who are interested in studying the mechanisms of muscle protein degradation during atrophy by the ubiquitin proteasome system. We use a sophisticated in vivo gene transfection technique to study gene effects in normal or atrophying muscle of adult wild type mouse. Our focus is on the mechanisms promoting degradation of the muscle contractile unit, the myofibrils, by probing the functions of certain atrophy-related ubiquitin ligases. Our goal is to identify key players in order to develop countermeasures to block or attenuate this debilitating process.
