Exploring the metabolic function of a novel mitochondrial protein named MTCH2

Phd Research position in the department of Department of Biological Regulation at Weizmann institute of Science in the group of Atan Gross for 4 years. Mitochondrial Carrier Homolog 2 (MTCH2) functions as a receptor-like protein for the pro-apoptotic BID protein, and is essential for BID-induced mitochondria outer-membrane permeabilization (MOMP; Zaltsman et al. Nat Cell Biol 2010). MTCH2 was also identified as one of six new gene loci associated with Body Mass Index (BMI) and obesity in humans suggesting that MTCH2 may also play a role in metabolism. To explore the possible role of MTCH2 in metabolism we generated a MTCH2 liver conditional knockout mouse, a MTCH2 skeletal muscle-conditional knockout mouse, and a brain-conditional KO mouse. We performed metabolic profiling both in vitro and in vivo and the preliminary results are exciting. This position is open to further explore the different initial phenotypes that have arised from these studies.
