Marie Curie Actions funded job vacancy 'HR Excellence in Research' logo awarded to institutions actively implementing the European Charter and Code for Researchers PhD position (ESR) in “New design methods for reflective imaging system, in particular EUV lithography”, as part of the Marie Curie ITN project ADOPSYS: Advanced Optical System Design

This position is part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network ADOPSYS. This project aims to educate and train twelve starting researchers in optical modelling and design, and to develop disruptive new optical design tools that are broadly applicable to optical design problems and to significantly increase design productivity and efficiency. The project is closely related to European industry and the consortium consists of seven academic institutions and three industrial companies that are full partners and another four companies that are associate partners. All partners host and provide supervision of the researchers.

Description

In this PhD project, methods for global optimization problems of reflective imaging systems will be studied. These optimization problems typically have many parameters and the optimization landscape has many local minima. We will study in particular the saddle point method and other methods to investigate the structure of the design space and to obtain new local minima from already found ones. One of the important applications is the design of Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) imaging systems for next generation IC lithography machines. The student will take part in the training scheme provided by the ADOPSYS consortium and will in this way obtain a very broad knowledge of optical design methods both for imaging and for non-imaging systems. As part of the project the student will spend 3 months in the research laboratory of Carl Zeiss SMT in Oberkochen, Germany which is the world-leading industrial company in optical lithography for IC manufacturing.
The suitable candidate PhD researcher should be interested in optical design and should have a good knowledge of optics or a related field and should have as background a master degree in physics or electrical engineering. Good knowledge of English both written and oral is required to be able to submit reports and the doctoral thesis in English. All suitably qualified candidates irrespective of gender or nationality are welcome to apply as long as the following conditions have been fulfilled: 1. Applicants should be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, including the period of research training, starting at the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate. 2 Applicants should not be a national of the country of the host institution. 3. Applicants should not have resided or performed their main activity in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 year period immediately prior to the start date. APPLICATIONS: Applicants should submit a personal statement explaining their motivation, a CV and at least one academic reference. The project has started on the 1st of September 2013. No specific deadline is set at the moment; interviews will be carried out until the position has been filled. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply.
