Join the European Industrial Doctorate on Solvent Emission Control as a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher: Two PhD positions on anaerobic biodegradation of solvents (Valencia, Spain)
The European Industrial Doctorate on Solvent Emission Control (TrainonSEC) is a joint doctoral training project between the University of Valencia (Spain) and the private company Pure Air Solutions (Netherlands) funded by the European Commission. TrainonSEC offers cross-sector training in the area of Environmental Engineering; in particular, the doctoral candidates will be trained in the development of a clean technology to recycle diluted VOC waste gas emissions into biogas (bio-energy).
TrainonSEC is a European Industrial Doctorate project starting on September 2013, where four doctoral researchers from any nationality will be employed 50% of their time by University of Valencia and 50% by Pure Air Solutions. All recruited researchers will be enrolled in the Doctorate Programme of Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering of the University of Valencia. Their PhD projects will be co-supervised by one professor of the University of Valencia and one member of Pure Air Solutions
TrainonSEC doctoral candidates will have the opportunity to spend half of their training time in the private company Pure Air Solutions while benefiting from a training programme that combines (1) hands-on research training with (2) specialised training on analytical chemistry and instrumentation, applied microbiology, process control and automation, and process modelling and simulation and (3) additional training on relevant complementary skills (creative thinking, project and time management, IPR, presentation skills, etc).
Doctoral candidates will also enjoy training opportunities at two Dutch companies Altacel Transparant and EKwadraat during short stays in the employment period at Pure Air Solutions.
Two 3-year PhD positions on anaerobic biodegradation of solvents are open at Prof. Carmen Gabaldón´s research group on Environmental Engineering at the University of Valencia. Prof. Gabaldón’s group is a leading research group on the control of biological Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) that develops different biological and physic-chemical end-of-pipe technologies for the removal of VOCs from air emissions.
The objective of this PhD project is the study of the anaerobic biodegradability of soluble solvents of industrial interest. The research will be carried out: first at laboratory scale by batch and continuous experiments; second at industrial scale by prototype test. Laboratory scale experiments will be done during first 18 months at the University of Valencia, and prototype experiments will be performed during next 18 months at Pure Air Solutions.
For this position it’s desirable that the candidate has knowledge about water and air treatments, and practical laboratory experience in the field. Additionally, practical experience with pilot units is also recommended.
The objective of this PhD project is the study of the mass transfer limitations on the coupling of an anaerobic reactor and a water scrubber to remove VOC air emissions. The project includes the study of the gas-liquid mass transfer limitations for washing VOCs from air plus the methane degassing of the effluent of the anaerobic reactor. Both systems will be tested at laboratory scale in the University of Valencia (18 months) and at prototype scale at Pure Air Solutions (18 months).
For this position it’s desirable that the candidate has knowledge about mass transfer limitations and water and air treatments, and practical experience with process modelling tools (MATLAB, HYSYS, etc). Additionally, practical laboratory experience is also recommended.

The selected candidates will be enrolled on a working contract with social security coverage for a total of 36 months (18 months at University of Valencia and 18 months at Pure Air Solutions). He/She will benefit from a competitive salary according to Marie Curie standards (living and mobility allowances) and will have access to a set of training activities organised within the TrainonSEC network.

|The total duration of the vacancies is 3 years. The recruitment will be done by University of Valencia (Valencia, Spain), where researcher will have an employment contract during 18 months. After this period, researcher will have an employment contract with duration of 18 months with Pure Air Solutions (Zwolle, The Netherlands).
Candidates should also fulfil the following mobility criteria: to have spent less than 12 months in the country of the recruiting organisation in the 3 years previous to the recruitment. The mobility criteria are applicable on both employment contracts, meaning that the mobility criteria need to be met at the start of the job being hosted in Spain, and have to be met at the time of movement to Pure Air Solutions in The Netherlands (1,5 years after the recruitment).
