Postdoctoral project:ToF-SIMS surface analysis methodology development for brass plated steel wires obtained by wet wire drawing.

The Centre for Material Forming (CEMEF) is one of the research laboratories of MINES ParisTech (top executive French engineering school).

Description

Objective and context :A strong interaction between some additives of the drawing lubricant and the brass surface occurs during the wet wire drawing process of brass-plated steel cord. Even though the reaction products are present in very small quantity, they give the wire specific properties (adhesion, protection...). The chemical nature of the reaction layers formed, and the type of bonds is therefore an open question. Preliminary experiments have shown the capacity of ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy) to disclose these characteristics. Thanks to its high sensitivity, this technique detects very small amounts of chemical species in the first atomic or molecular layer on the surface. The reproducibility of the measurement and the representativeness of the conclusions drawn will be studied on laboratory-made surfaces first, then on industrial wires, and procedures will be elaborated to improve them. In a second stage, this methodology will be applied to different chemical additives used in steel cord wire drawing lubricants.
