Within the ITN GRESIMO, LMS International has an open position: ESR1 (duration 36 months) will focus on vibro-acoustic simulation of lightweight and locally damped structures.
The candidate will develop next-generation vibro-acoustic modeling methods for analyzing the vibro-acoustic performance of lightweight vehicle structures. Due to the complex nature of the materials (e.g. frequency dependency, local/high damping), the traditional modal superposition approaches fail, and alternatives must be developed. The ESR will receive training and actively perform research in all aspects of numerical methodology development. This comprises the use of appropriate physical material models, the application of advanced and novel discretization approaches (e.g. higher order formulations, enrichment schemes) and the use of state-of-the-art numerical solver technologies (e.g. Krylov methods, Padé expansions).
GRESIMO (Best Training for Green and Silent Mobility) is an Initial Training Network (ITN) Nr. 290050, funded under the FP7 Marie Curie programme of the EC. Duration: Oct. 1, 2011 - Sept. 30, 2015.
BACKGROUND about GRESIMO: The proposed GRESIMO aims to bring together early career researchers and experienced colleagues from across Europe, covering three key R&D areas for achieving green and silent mobility:
• Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH)
• Light Weight Design (LWD)
• Hybridisation/Electrification (H/E)
For tackling the green and silent mobility challenge, R&D progress is not only required within these individual disciplines, as also the interdisciplinary connections must be strengthened. The GRESIMO R&D scope has been defined in view of achieving this, and the aim is to do so from a broad range of professional backgrounds.
The focus of GRESIMO is to motivate and encourage early stage researchers for scientific work in the new interdisciplinary fields between the 3 key research areas. The project consortium provides high level education, training facilities & technical supervision for PhD fellows in the disciplines NVH, LWD & H/E and in the connections. The target of GRESIMO is to support and to train fellows in their phase of doctoral thesis in advanced research methodology. The support is provided to find relevant and innovative PhD topics. In addition, the possibility to receive specific education as well as theoretical and practical training in one or two of the mentioned interdisciplinary fields to the fellows, in order to encourage scientific work in this area and to enable top level PhD research.
The new interdisciplinary research areas, positioned between the established (conventional) Areas of NVH, LWD & H/E comprises all actually known challenges of the three mentioned disciplines added through topics of the new interdisciplinary connecting areas, whenever advanced vehicles for future demands will be developed. The vehicles can be of different type, e.g. road, rail, air planes, etc. The noise generated by these vehicles is seen as an important and pressing environmental issue, in particular for urban areas. In addition, the conflicting demands of noise and weight reduction for low CO2 emissions require enhanced analysis and optimization techniques for the product development.
CONSORTIUM: a well-balanced group of full partners: 3 universities, 2 research institutes and 4 companies (two automotive OEMs and two functional performance engineering solution providers). The industrial partners bring in application knowledge and expertise, and the research partners bring in a range of engineering methodologies, the capability of PhD research training, provision of courses and dissemination of results.

CANDIDATE PROFILE: All candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English. The R&D is highly multidisciplinary. An ideal candidate has an M.Sc. in engineering (e.g. mechanics, materials, electronics, physics) and an adequate mathematical & computational background.
• Specific experience with CAE simulation methodologies and software (Finite Element Method (FEM), Boundary Element Method (BEM)...) is an advantage.
• Affinity with vehicle engineering (e.g. H/E vehicle architectures, use of lightweight materials such as composites) is an asset;
• Knowledge of programming languages (C/C++, Fortran, Visual.Basic, ...) and/or knowledge of Matlab are an advantage.
• Candidates who have the proper qualifications may get the opportunity to perform this work as part of a PhD study.

MARIE CURIE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA for Early-Stage Researcher (ESR): the candidate must holds an MSc degree in Engineering and has less than 4 years of experience and has not yet been awarded a doctoral degree .
The research activities will mainly be carried out at LMS International in Leuven, Belgium. This is envisaged to be combined with research visits and/or short-term secondments to other members of the network.
 The research experience includes the period since gaining a university degree giving the candidate access to doctoral studies (the degree must entitle the holder to embark on doctoral studies, without having to acquire any further qualifications) or already in possession of a doctoral degree, independently of the time taken to acquire it. Among others, following criteria apply for eligibility:
• the researcher shall not be a national of the State in which the hosting partner's research team is located
• at the time of appointment, the researcher may not have resided or carried out her/his main activity in the country of the hosting partner for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to her/his appointment
• women are especially encouraged to apply.
