The Center for Research in Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry (CEPID-CeMEAI) at the University of São Paulo opens a post-doctoral research position in Operations Research. The selected candidate will work at the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences of the University of São Paulo in São Carlos/SP, Brazil.
The São Paulo Research Foundation provides the financial support with a monthly fellowship of R$ 6.143,40. Financial support can also be provided to cover transportation expenses as to the move to São Carlos, Brazil. An extra grant is also provided to cover participation in highly relevant conferences and workshops, as well as research trips (limited to 15% of the annual amount of the fellowship).
The position is initially for one year, renewable for a second year depending on the candidate performance. The start date is negotiable, but May 2016 is preferred.
The post-doc will interact with the visualization and optimization groups at CEPID-CeMEAI. The post-doc is expected to perform research in the field of two-dimensional cutting and packing problems with application in visualization of multidimensional time varying data. This includes the development of computational and mathematical models properly built to generate visualization layouts. The main scenario of application is governmental and urban data visual analytics.
Visualization and Visual Analysis of urban and governmental data have large impact on the planning of public policy, optimal use of resources and efficient public administration. In the past few years, the use of optimization techniques to build intuitive visual layouts has greatly increased, being a promising research area.
The research will be led jointly by Professors Franklina Maria Bragion de Toledo and Luís Gustavo Nonato.
Applicants should have PhD in Optimization or related fields such as Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, with some experience in optimization, especially in two-dimensional cutting and packing problems. Candidates must have got their PhD in the last 5 years.
Please send your application before March 31, 2016 to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com. Please indicate "Post-doctoral application - Operations Research" in the subject line. Applications should include curriculum vitae, statement of research interests and two contact information for recommendation letters (only PDF files).
