2/2016 - Magnetic nanostructures for biomedical applications

The research activity is performed in the frame of a project aimed at establishing the traceability of the electromagnetic radiation in biomedical field as already done for ionizing radiation. Recently, possible applications of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) have emerged as an important tool for cancer therapy, either through techniques for hyperthermia or targeted drug-delivery exploiting magnetic field gradient to deliver directly on site. Despite the well-established therapeutic potential, a standardization of the chemical and physical properties needed to define treatment protocols must be reached. The magnetic properties of static and dynamic MNP will be studied and measured through the development of specific set-up. Theoretical models to understand and predict the behavior of MNPs in a wide range of frequencies will be applied.
