Mitochondrial Inheritance and Biogenesis: functional and evolutionary aspects

Please note that the job is no longer active!

Mitochondria are a fundamental component of the eukaryotic cell, nonetheless available data on their biology are largely incomplete. Most of the about 1,500 nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins are still unknown/uncharacterized. This project aims at expanding the knowledge about molecular processes of mitochondrial inheritance and biogenesis in metazoans, by exploiting the unusual system of Doubly Uniparental Inheritance (DUI), observed in some bivalve molluscs. More in detail, the interactions between mitochondria and germ line determinants, cytoskeleton and factors controlling mitochondrial replication and transcription will be investigated using Real-Time qPCR, RNA-Seq, In Situ Hybridization, immunocytochemistry and comparative bioinformatic analyses, in the DUI species Ruditapes philippinarum. The ultimate goal of this project is to make DUI a useful experimental model for mitochondrial biology.

Please note that the full description may be available in the national language since some job boards have their own publication policy. Thank you for your understanding!
