The research studies the role of Top Management Team (TMT) of the target company and of the acquiring firm in the acquisitions of young high-tech firms. Previous research on the topic has studied the acquisitions of young high-tech firms using firm-level data. We focus on the role of individuals, and in particular, of the members of the TMT, who are responsible for strategic decisions, to offer a rigorous micro-foundation of the theme. Our main insight is that the key individuals involved in acquisitions of high-tech firms possess specific knowledge, which is crucial to the acquisition. Then, we analyse how the features of TMT have an impact on post-acquisition re-organization process and, ultimately, on the post-acquisition performance. We pay particular attention to cases in which individuals are particularly salient, for example, acquisitions involving companies in the pre-patenting phase.
