Patients with ALS are required to make decisions concerning quality of life and symptom management over the course of their disease. Decision-making was influenced by three levels of factors: macro, meso and micro. The macro level is referred to the context defined at national and regional level by policy makers. At meso level we encounter the decision-making environment of specialized multidisciplinary ALS centres, practitioners, local health services, which supported decision-making by providing patients with disease-specific information and specialized care planning. The micro level regards patients and their family, including response to deterioration, end of life decision and individual/familiar attributes (age, education, sex, informal network, family condition, etcetera). The qualitative research aims to describe the process of healthcare priority setting at the three levels of decision-making and to identify good practices and any critical issues related to the process.
