The caustic technique uses the celestial coordinates and redshifts of galaxies to estimate the gravitational potential and mass profiles of galaxy clusters from the central region to radii much larger than the virial radius. Similarly to gravitational lensing, the caustic technique does not rely on the dynamical equilibrium of the cluster. These features make the caustic technique a possible method to estimate the mass accretion rate of galaxy clusters. The hired fellow will apply the technique to real clusters in the redshift range 0.1-0.8 extracted from the HeCS catalogue and from the redshift survey HectoMAP. This estimate of the instantaneous accretion rate of clusters will represent the first measure ever of this quantity, an unprecedented test of the standard cosmological model and will constrain alternative theories of gravity.
