What is the relationship between Germany and Europe? The Euro crisis is showing the relevance of a key issue in the modern German intellectual debate. The goal of this research is to systematically retrace its occurrence along the twentieth century. During the first half of the century, Europe has been conceived through the conception of Mitteleuropa where Germany is something separate from liberal West and despotic East. After World War II, the idea of Carolingian Europe emerges in the frame of the integration process. In the eighties geopolitics drawn on national interest contrasts with the idea of cosmopolitan Europe. The project implies the study of twentieth-century German sources: monographs and articles. To this end the first year would involve a research period in Berlin, at the Staatsbibliothek and the Humboldt University (chair of Theorie der Politik), followed by a research period at the Institute of European Studies of the University of Chemnitz during the second year.
