AGE detoxification power in the oocyte and ovarian microenvironment: relevance to aging and polycystic ovarian syndrome

A possible role for AGEs in ovarian dysfunctions underlying reproductive ageing and ovarian polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has been recently proposed. AGEs accumulation is regulated by glyoxalases, the enzymatic system involved in the detoxification of methylglyoxal, the most powerful AGE precursor. The main goal of this research program is to address the hypothesis that reduced fertility associated with reproductive aging and/or PCOS might result from deregulation of detoxification mechanisms with anti-AGE effects in the germ cell and/or in the ovarian microenvironment.
