European Research Council funded fellowship The role of brain oscillations in temporal integration windows

Our brain receives a steady, analogue flow of information from our sensory receptors that must be organized into objects, events and scenes. Integration of sensory information within the brain takes place at multiple time scales (for review, see: Van Rullen & Koch, 2003). A hypothesis is that spatial and temporal integration should be reflected in the frequency band power and phase, as measured by EEG or MEG.

The main focus of this research position is to study temporal integration and segregation to see whether temporal integration windows are linked to brain oscillations, using a series of MEG, eye tracking and behavioural studies. Specifically, the tasks involved in this research, which is part of the CoPeST project (Construction of Perceptual Space-Time), include planning, executing and analysing studies, using MEG on temporal integration windows. In addition, the research fellow will develop methods to induce and measure changes in on-going brain oscillations.

Eligibility criteria

a)PhD in psychology, neuroscience or related areas, awarded by an Italian university or a foreign one and recognised as equivalent to the Italian qualification by the assessment committee for the sole purposes of this selection procedure.

b)appropriate scientific and professional experience required to carry out the research described in article 1;

c)MEG expertise, including source modelling, time-frequency analysis, measuring phrase synchrony and functional connectivity;

d)psychophysics expertise, in particular with visual masking paradigms;

e)eye tracking experience;

f)experience with advanced statistical analyses including mixed model logistic regression;

g)at least one publication in visual perception;

h)experience with MATLAB (or similar) and with software for analysing electrophysiological signals (FieldTrip or similar);

i)excellent written and spoken English.
