The research, focused on Octavia Minor, sister of Octavian and wife first of Caius Claudius Marcellus and then of Marcus Antonius, will follow two lines:
- outline the activity of an important matron in the critical (and so extra mores) political and social context of the late republic, and then, in the light of the new political reality of the imperial court, investigate in which ways women could interfere in public activities. These in fact were rewritten first by the triumviral political experience and then redefined by Augustus’ moral reforms;
- with the aim of investigate the patterns of female conduct, verify in which ways the ‘matron model of behaviour’ was redefine during the transition from Republic to Principate.
We will operate through an interdisciplinary approach in order to collect and compare all the data from literary, epigraphic, numismatic and archaeological records.
