The long-term research plan is that of setting up a patient-specific procedure, based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to support decision-making for surgeons of the upper respiratory airways. The procedure will use patients' CT scans to arrive at the simulation of the flow within the nasal cavities, thus providing the surgeon with a virtual surgery tool. The project, designed in collaboration with a group of ear-nose-throat surgeons, aims at building a test rig where detailed and reliable measurements of the fluid dynamical quantities in the nasal cavities modeled after a specific patient can be acquired. Such measurements are an essential validation step for the CFD procedure. The objective is thus designing and building a physical model (at approx. 1:3 scale) of the nasal cavities; implementing a system for recirculating air within the model; characterizing (as a function of three spatial directions and time) the fluid dynamic field through laser velocimetry techniques
