The Beet necrotic yellow vein virus, the causal agent of Rhizomania disease, and the Beet soil borne mosaic virus belongs to Benyvirus. Both viruses are transmitted by Polymyxa betae, the genome consists of four plus sense RNA and they have similar particles morphology. Previous studies showed that p14 are suppressor of PTGS and that RNA-3 and -4 of one virus can be replicated and encapsidated by the helper strains (RNA-1 and -2) of the other virus. However, chimeric isolates are not present in nature. So it’s interesting to start the study of viral chimeras into test plant and the capability of complementation between the p14s.
The research project will analyze:
• Replication, cell-to-cell and long distance movement of chimerical virus.
• Complementation between the different p14
The results of this research will allow a greater understanding about molecular characterization of Benyvirus the suppression of PTGS.
