Fellowship posted by Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (01/10/2013 03.06)

European Research Council funded fellowship Photosynthesis as a compensation mechanism of the negative effects of ocean acidification on calcification of model Anthozoa from the mediterranean Sea

Please note that the job is no longer active!

Transplants of model Mediterranean Anthozoa at the CO2 emissions of Panarea, which create a pH gradient matching IPCC scenarios. Measurement of seawater chemistry/oceanography (sensors and seawater/gas samplings). Micro-Computerized Tomography analyses to determine sample age and generate growth models. Assessment of population abundance/structure (phototransects). Collection of live Anthozoa and shipment to the aquarium system to measure: growth, respiration, photosynthesis, chlorophyll concentration, zooxanthellae density with standard methods. Application photoacoustics for further estimations of physiological parameters. Analysis of: crystal architechture, mineral phases, associated organic matrix, and their interactions (SEM, XRD, FTIR). Study of the control of OM on calcification (in vitro crystallization). Spatial localization and size of pores (NMR) and mechanical properties (nanoindentation).

Please note that the full description may be available in the national language since some job boards have their own publication policy. Thank you for your understanding!
