The image of the astronomer between Antiquity and Middle Ages. Studies on the Latin tradition of Aratus Phaenomena

Please note that the job is no longer active!

The aim of this project is to analyze the influence of Aratus’poem in the Latin culture, focusing in particular on the different literary and iconographic receptions (translations, echoes, allusions on one hand, and images of the astronomer and of the constellations on the other).
The study will consist of three aspects. The first is an analysis of the literary and iconographic evidences of Aratus as a model for the astronomer; in this context will be exploited the latest technical devices for the organization of databases.
Another step is the commented edition of Cicero’s Aratea – with a critical revision of the text – in order to highlight both the scientific and the stylistic features of the poem.
The third field of the research will focus on the fortune of Aratus in the Latin literature, in particular during the Augustan age, when sky takes on a political meaning in the context of the imperial ideology.

Please note that the full description may be available in the national language since some job boards have their own publication policy. Thank you for your understanding!
