Although,nitrogen is an essential nutrient for the growth and development of plants,it represents a major source of pollution in aquatic ecosystems and drinking water.In this context,this research aims to select genotypes able to combine the high nitrogen use efficiency(NUE)with high plant productivity for a sustainable agriculture.Morpho-physiological techniques (image analysis of root system,nitrogen uptake activity,plasma-membrane enzyme activity) along with advanced methods for the analysis of ion fluxes by using ion-selective microelectrodes (ISM),and molecular approaches (gene expressions of nitrogen transporters and pm H+-ATPase)will be carried out.These approaches will allow to select genotypes characterized by high NUE and to identify morpho-physiological and molecular traits underlying this efficiency.These knowledge will be useful for future assisted breeding programs.
