Without suitable reuse interventions most historic rural buildings are likely to be improperly used or to remain unused. The increasing reuse of traditional rural buildings for non agricultural functions leads to severe risks of environmental and landscape impacts. Within a regulation framework which pays increasing attention to the need for a sustainable use of the resources of rural areas, thus reducing the construction of new structures and infrastructures, the research aims to:
- define criteria for the reuse and functional adjustment of historic rural buildings, both for agricultural, agritourism, and non-agricultural purposes, assessing their social, economic, landscape and environmental sustainability;
- define criteria for the integration of new building volumes in existing farmsteads with historic rural buildings.
