Bioactive molecules in compound ascidians

Basically, the project intends to identify, in compound ascidians, novel antimicrobial molecules for practical applications in sanitary field and aquaculture. The emergence of pathogen resistance to antibiotics and the increased incidence of fungal infections are matters of great concern. The variety of molecules currently available to cope with this problem is limited and, furthermore, these molecules are often toxic and prone to induce resistance. Hence, the impellent need for new antimicrobial/anti-tumoral/immunomodulatory molecules for which invertebrates undoubtedly represent optimal natural sources.
