Recent advances in the field of ubiquitin-dependent degradation indicate that proteasome-mediated degradation requires ubiquitin-receptors that can recognise the ubiquitylated proteins and facilitate their degradation. Among the various ubiquitin-receptors, the p97 ATPase is uniquely endowed with a specialised ATP-dependent segregase activity, which allows it to separate ubiquitylated substrates from cellular structures or from other protein partners.
