Biosilica extraction from rice husk ash (RHA) and fly ash inertization.

Recently at the University of Brescia it was developed a new method for the inertization of fly ash containing heavy metals, based on the use of commercial colloidal silica. Rice husk ash (RHA) is a solid waste byproduct of combustion plants fed with rice husk. The principal component of RHA is SiO2 (around 75%). So it would be used as a source of silica. The objective of this project is the development of new materials starting from industrial fly ash and RHA. In particular the activity will be devoted to the extraction of silica (bio-silica) from RHA. This will be then used for the inertization of industrial fly ash, leading to a new inert material. This new synthesis method will considerably grow the sustainability of the final product.
