The research aims to investigate and apply innovative approaches for spatial planning, in particular with regard to environmental sustainability and landscape policies, in the framework of the European Research program Horizon 2020. Building on previous and current research carried out at the DIST, tools and methods in support of territorial governance will be investigated, such as: ecological models for spatial/land use planning; identification of innovative territorial and environmental indicators in territorial planning (e.g. ecosystem and landscape services); integration and synergies between spatial/landscape planning and rural development policies. Attention is paid to practical outcomes of the research in supporting the elaboration of spatial/landscape plans and related strategic environmental assessment processes, and to those key-issues that can contribute to a European-level framework.
