The purpose of the research activity is the development of relevant in vitro models for the study of cardiac ageing and disease processes. In particular, the role of cardiac extracellular matrix as main modulator of cellular and organ function will be evaluated. In the project, an ex vivo tissue engineered aged myocardial model will be prepared to be used for both obtaining a clear understanding of the physiopathological mechanisms underlying ageing process and to test effectiveness of potential therapeutic strategies under controlled dynamic conditions.
Research activity consist of culture under oxidative stress and to hypoxia/reoxygenation of bioabsorbable scaffolds/heart-derived cells construct. The constructs will be characterized in terms of cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis, changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, matrix production and pattern of genetic expression.
