SILKbioTECH – Characterization of silkworm transgenic lines

The aim of SILKbioTECH project is to develop a new silk fiber that is provided with antimicrobial activity. This function will be given by the presence of antimicrobial peptides expressed in the silk gland of the silkworm (Bombyx mori) and co-extruded in vivo together with silk proteins. The expression of the antimicrobial peptide in the silk gland will be induced by using molecular biology techniques that will allow the insertion of a genic construct into silkworm genome. This construct will work under the promoters of silk proteins (fibroin and/or sericin). During the research project a cellular and molecular characterization of the silkworm transgenic lines as well as an evaluation of the cytotoxic activity of the transgenic silk on human cell lines will be performed.
