The research is intended to develop 3 main issues related to the concept of Modularisation. First,to obtain a new enhanced and enlarged definition of modularisation in industrial plant design and operations management, enabling a new step forward in the Industrial Engineering science.Second, according to the different phases of the plant life cycle, to understand which are the feasible modularisation mechanisms, the potential interdependencies between mechanisms, and the extent of the current practices.Third, to investigate the pre-conditions that must be accomplished, enabling factors that allow the modularisation to take place, and barriers that limit the extent and intensity of its implementation, together with the impact of Modularisation on the plant and therefore on the operations performances. As for the methodology, systematic literature review, confirmative focus group interviews,Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM),survey and multi-case study will be used.
