According to recent studies, several variables seem to contribute to real life functioning in patients with schizophrenia. The present study is aimed to investigate: a) the role of personal resources and of factors related to the context in modulating the impact of variables related to the disease on real-life social functioning; b) the domains of negative symptoms and neurocognitive functions associated to real-life social functioning, trying to define whether their impact on functioning is direct or indirect; c) the relationship between insight and poor functioning, exploring the role of potential mediators of the relationship, such as positive attitude toward treatment and impaired metacognition; d) the prevalence and the severity of somatic comorbidities in persons with schizophrenia; e) the heritability of disease-related variables and the genetic variants associated with them.
