The research project aims to investigate the features, potentialities and critical issues of the development (design and implementation) process of strategic performance measurement systems in complex and knowledge intensive organizations. In particular, the research aims to examine the main features of the development process that ensure both the integrated nature and the integrating role of performance measurement systems in managing internal interdependencies between different groups of expertise. To this aim, a deductive/inductive approach will be used by combining the literature review with the empirical analysis of longitudinal case studies. Particularly, the developrnent process of a performance measurement system in a knowledge intensive organization will be examined.
