Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection. More than 100 different HPV types infect the squamous epithelia of the skin or the oral and genital mucosa. Cervical cancer is a frequent consequence of high risk HPV infection, HPV-16 in particular. Additional viral factors (persistence, expression of the viral oncogenes, integration into the cell chromosomes, polymorphism) are involved in cancer progression.
